Ā

On 19th May, 2022, we left our little flat in Allschwil, Switzerland to begin a journey, which we called ā€œWorld Tripā€, for want of a better name. We flew to Copenhagen to embark on a week’s cruise around the Norwegian Fjords but after that we had no plans, other than to travel as long and as far as we could.

Exactly four years have passed since then. During that time, we have travelled to 50 countries on 6 continents, using every means of transport available to man and walking the equivalent of the distance separating Basle from Singapore (13’000 km).

We have seen some of the world’s greatest natural wonders, learnt about great civilizations and cultures, admired incredible temples and shrines from ages past and even had a glimpse into the future in giant megacities. Everywhere we went, Ā we have met people with very different cultures and tradition but sharing one thing in common: their humanity. Complete strangers have shown us great kindness and consideration, along the way, without any expectation of a return.Ā

Mark Twain once wrote, ā€œTravel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry and narrow-mindedness.ā€ Are there any better reasons than that to travel? There is still so much more left to discover but for now, we wanted to look back on some of our highlights to date:

Favourite Country: Uzbekistan (Honourable Mentions for Vietnam, Japan, China, Peru, Chile and Bolivia)

Top 3 experiences: 1) Hiking the Fitz Roy Mountain in Patagonia (Argentina); 2) Gazing at the Registan in Samarkand (Uzbekistan) 3) Walking along Ā The Great Wall of China.

(Honourable Mentions for Riding the Cable Car in La Paz (Bolivia); Discovering the Inca ruins in and around Cusco (Peru); Visiting the Temples in Angkor Wat (Cambodia); Feeling the samba vibe in Salvador de Bahia (Brazil); Meditating in the Peace Memorial Park, Hiroshima (Japan)

Most unsettling experience:Ā Crossing the border in no-man’s land between Uzbekistan and Tajikistan)

Friendliest people: Uzbekistan (Honourable Mentions for Cambodia and China)

Best Food: Thailand (Honourable Mention for Argentina)

Biggest Disappointments: Rio de Janeiro and Bali

You can read more on all of the above by consulting our blog, which is right up to date and includes a description of every destination we have been to.

Right now, we are taking a short break while we await the cessation of hostilities in Iran and finish the building of our new house in Palawan. But we are already getting itchy feet once more and are actively checking Skyscanner for the next best deal.

Onwards and upwards!
